Calm interiors, built for real life.

Design Studio is a New Zealand–based interior design practice working with private homes and commercial spaces. Our focus is simple: spatial clarity, honest materials, and decisions that still feel right years from now.

About the studio

A small practice with a clear standard.

We work with a limited number of projects at a time to stay present: fewer rushed decisions, more care in details. Based in New Zealand, we work in Auckland and remotely across NZ depending on scope.

What “calm” means to us

Calm isn’t beige. It’s when the room makes sense: pathways are clear, storage is realistic, and the lighting works after sunset. The palette can be bold — as long as it’s controlled by rules.

Spatial clarity Proportions, zoning, and circulation that feel effortless.
Material integrity Finishes that age well, feel honest, and suit real use.
Long-term comfort Design decisions you won’t want to “redo” next year.

A practical aesthetic

Soft contrast, tactile materials, and comfortable light.

What we don’t do (on purpose)

Many projects fail not because of taste, but because decisions were made in the wrong order. Here’s what we actively avoid — so your interior stays coherent.

Buying “hero” furniture too early

We lock layout first, so the sofa doesn’t block circulation later.

Trends without context

We use references, not recipes — and adapt them to your site and light.

Over-styling

A finished space should feel lived-in, not like a showroom.

“Mystery” finishes

If it stains easily or ages badly, we’d rather skip it.

Principles

A few rules that keep decisions easy.

Tap a card to reveal the “why”. These are the small constraints that make a space feel expensive — without being loud.

How we work

Structured enough to be predictable.

You’ll always know what happens next. Choose a tab to see what a typical engagement looks like.

Discovery: get clarity fast

We align on goals, constraints, budget range, and timeline — then decide what “done” looks like. You don’t need perfect plans: photos and a walkthrough are enough to start.

Timeline approach

We prefer fewer steps with clarity. If lead times are long, we plan for realistic availability.
